History: A Secret Interest

When I was little I used to want to find out what happened to Amelia Earhart and loved hearing stories about the Titanic and what it must have been like on that faithful night. With the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic coming up on the 15th stories of the ship have been popping up all over the internet and specials have been all over tv. I am returning to my childhood historian state 🙂 I was about to start doing my homework when I came across these stories.

While I can not handle scary movies unless I have a pillow to cuddle with and a blanket to cover my eyes, ghost stories have become more of an interest to me. In these stories its crazy to think that these ghost made it all the way back from the bottom of the Atlantic to the United States. The Captain came back to “haunt” his childhood home! I guess I always thought you haunted the place in which you died, like the man who committed suicide in his San Francisco apartment. Even more bazaar is that people have said to be able to smell the ghosts, such as the ghost’s rose perfume. Anyway read these stories and see for yourself! Maybe post ghost stories that you have found! Continue reading “History: A Secret Interest”

ITS MARCH!

Currently watching the semi finals for the Big Ten Basketball tournament, the brackets come out this Monday. The NCAA basketball tournament is like Christmas come early for basketball fans. The games are exciting, the players are competitive, the coaches are genius, and it lasts all month long!

This was the 2011 bracket, the 2012 bracket will be coming out on Monday, 3/12!

For those that have never filled out a bracket, shame, it is a sudden death style tournament where teams are ranked 1 through 16 in 4 sections. Fans choose which team is going to win narrowing it down from 64 to 32 to the Sweet 16 to Elite 8 and then the Final 4, finally down to the Championship which this year is in New Orleans. Even teams that you dont usually watch, fans start rooting for. For example, the Butler team a few years ago were true underdogs making it all the way to the Championship I believe and even fans who had never heard of Butler were cheering for the young coach and his team.

I have been filling out these brackets for as long as I can remember. Choose the teams however you want, by rank, by record, by mascot…it doesnt matter. Print off your bracket and grab a group of friends to make it competitive. Enjoy March-its almost summer!

Established Locally, Thinking Globally

I made this! For a media class I was in, myself and two of my classmates did research on a local coffee shop with a mission to fund an orphanage in Haiti. If you’re even in Madison you should come check Redamte Coffee House out! Bring your own mug and their will donate what they save on not using a cup to the orphanage. Everyone there is so awesome and friendly and always willing to talk if you have any questions or want to get involved. Enjoy the video!

Obama Sings!

This was my friends status a couple weeks ago and I thought it was very clever and hysterical. I watched a few of the videos and thought they were all really well done. It looks like it was done by someone in the White House-not sure if that means Obama knew about it or not. While I don’t think this is a political piece it is from different speeches he made and could spark viewers to check out speeches and therefore do political research-it made me just want to watch more of these videos. It is also pop culture since they were able to create recent pop hits from his political speeches. Well done and keep ’em coming!

What Story does Your Backyard Tell?

Colorado River at the Hoover Dam on the border of Arizona and Nevada

I watched “Chasing Water” and found the different parts of the Colorado River so interesting. I love that Pete McBride framed it in a personal way by connecting it to his backyard and childhood on the ranch in Colorado. The areal views are gorgeous and really tell the story, I only wish that his friend on the river had a camera as well to show what he was seeing on his paddle. I love that at the end it gives you a site so that someday the water can reach the sea again. The concept that water in some places is rising faster than ever and in other places its drying up just as fast. The Western United States is a very dry place, we know this, anyone who has been to Arizona knows that the greenest part of the state are the golf courses. Figuring out how to use the river wisely and sustainably will be the challenge for the next generations.
